Not the Greatest Cook in the World

Where I attempt to cook things, such as healthy meals and dishes from my husband's native country, Algeria.

Lentils March 18, 2010

After watching an episode of Everyday Food, I’ve came to a decision to actually start cooking beans, not just buy canned ones.  For one, it’s not really hard at all; it just takes some forethought and planning.  And it’s just cheaper, and you gain greater satisfaction in the process (it is more than just opening a can and dumping the contents).

So recently I’ve bought a bag of lentils and couldn’t decide what to do with them.  Mostly I would do soup, but the weather is warmer, and I wanted to try something different.  Posing the question via Twitter, Maroc Mama (Twitter | Blog) suggested a recipe from her site, Lentils with Caramelized Onions.  I made a minor modification (I used canned crush tomatoes instead of grated tomatoes), but it turned out fantastic.  The apartment smelled terrific as I was cooking.

But this is my shout-out to Maroc Mama of course.  Try her recipe, it’s great.
